The Machine Stops is a futuristic opera for our time.

In this future, AI-based computer networks control

the world's inhabitants (both physically and socially

by means of social media) while also providing

for their needs--a dystopian dream that can't be

dismissed. In this world, we meet a young couple

(Kuno and Em), who join forces to explore beyond

the boundaries of their enclosed world. Their discovery reaffirms humanity, while the story interleaves love, tenderness, and the brutality of control. The kaleidoscopic and powerful music and the story's important questions resonate with listeners.

The Machine Stops (2011, revised 2025). An opera in two acts and prologue for seven voices and chamber ensemble (flute, clarinet, violin, 'cello, bass, piano, percussion, and electronic sounds) is based on the short story by E. M. Forster. The video above was recorded from an excerpted reading on November 20th, 2025 at the National Opera Center, NY.
